iPod Touch and Mikey

Postby jerzyshore » Tue, 23 Feb 2010 8:23 pm

I have an iPod touch and a Nano and have just gotten a Blue Mikey.

The Mikey works beautifully with my Nano, and plugs and powers up with the Touch as well.

The question: The iTunes App Store will not install supporting software on the Touch, saying that "This App requires a microphone."

Well, with a Mikey, I HAVE a microphone, plugged in and everything!

Is there any way to get the supporting app(s) (like FiRe or Blue FiRe) to install on my iPod?

Thanks,

JG

Unfortunately, the 1st gen iPod touch does not seem to support mics at all.

In fact, I could get my Macally mic to work with my 1st gen touch on an early 3.x version of the iPhone OS, but it was disabled by one of the upgrades. If you can find a way to downgrade and don't mind losing a few features, you might be able to get your mic working with your touch.

Shame, really. Seems like Apple has intentionally disabled the use of external mics with the 1st gen touch. If I plug my mic in, it will work for a few seconds before an error pops up.

iPod Touch 1st Generation and Blue Mikey

Postby jerzyshore » Thu, 04 Mar 2010 7:45 pm

Does anyone know a way to get audio software to load onto an iPod Touch 1st Generation, so that I will be able to use it with my external (I have the Blue Mikey) dock connected microphone?

The Mikey works extremely well with my Nano, but the Touch obviously is a far more powerful and flexible device for field recording.

The iTunes store will not allow me to install sound applications such as "FiRe" - Field Recorder by Audiofile Engineering, on the 1st Gen Touch, because it has no microphone.

Interestingly enough, I was able to load the "Nibuzz" and "AudioMemos" apps (both also require microphones) which both work perfectly with the iPod Touch!

So why not "FiRe"??? Or any of the other sound apps that I have tried?

When the Mikey is plugged in, the iPod Touch has a microphone!

Ahhhhhhhh. OK :x

And so i am wondering if there is a something I am missing. Or some sort of workaround. Or whether I am at the mercy of the App developers who would have to allow installation of these apps in the same way the "Nibuzz" and "AudioMemos" apps do.

iPod Touch G1 with the latest OS and updates.

Thanks,

JG

The Touch DOES work with the MIKEY!

I was able to load the "Nibuzz" and "AudioMemos" apps (both also require microphones) which both work perfectly with the iPod Touch!

This has me thinking that it is a software thing.

AudioMemos installed like the usual app. And it works. The mic works. The App works.

I imagine there must be trouble with installing PAID apps on a device that would not normally work (a refund nightmare?), BUT, there should be a way to override this voluntarily.

I have heard about the downgrade to 3.0, but that really should not be necessary...

Ahhh well.

It must be some combination of Apple App Store and the App developers themselves causing this.

To clarify the last post:

The App "AudioMemos" works. I can record things with the Mikey on my iPod Touch G1.

BUT,

I want to be able to use the higher end recording apps like "FiRe", "Blue FiRe", or "Four Track"

Cheers, :D

Good to hear that the Mikey works with the 1st gen. When I first ran into the problem of software that would not load on my touch for the same reason, I contacted one developer (who ?) and was told that they were not going to support the 1st gen. I guess that supporting 1st gen is some non-trivial amount of work, but I don't know why.
