Universal Audio has announced the release of the highly anticipated Manley Massive Passive EQ plug-in. Working with Manley Labs, Universal Audio’s Massive Passive EQ plug-in represents the most ambitious hardware EQ modeling project to date, bringing UAD-2 users both the standard and mastering versions of this world-renowned EQ in one package.

The two-channel, four-band Manley Massive Passive EQ utilizes design strengths from choice console, graphic, parametric and Pultec EQs — delivering a fundamentally different EQ that’s beyond compare. The Massive Passive’s natural treatment of a signal lends itself to both radical tonal shaping as well as delicate vocal shading or subtle mastering enhancement.

“The Massive Passive EQ is one of our best-known products. We didn’t even want to entertain the idea of doing a plug-in unless it was really going to be done right,” commented EveAnna Manley, Owner, Manley Laboratories, Inc. “Our expectations were high for the plug-in emulation to be spot-on. Working with Universal Audio, we believe they’ve totally nailed it.”

The Manley Massive Passive EQ Powered Plug-In features include:

Highly coveted 2-channel, 4-band, passive, tube EQ emulation plug-in, both standard and mastering versions

Painstakingly modeled over a six month period and rigorously scrutinized by Manley Labs for authenticity

Filter curves, band interdependencies, distortion and hysteretic behavior all represented in plug-in — yielding a unique, very musical and “open” sound

“The Massive Passive is truly the ultimate in mastering grade EQs. It sounds warm without ever being dull; it stays precise while remaining highly musical,” offered UAD Powered Plug-Ins Product Manager, Will Shanks.

“Manley Labs represents quality, sonic excellence and unequivocal analog design expertise,” enthused Matt Ward, President of Universal Audio. “There has always been a special affinity between our companies, and we are elated to have EveAnna Manley joining us a plug-in partner for the UAD-2 platform.”

The Manley Massive Passive EQ plug-in is available for purchase via UA’s Online Store for $299. It is part of the new UAD Software v5.6.0 release, in addition to The EMT 140 Classic Plate Reverb, and the Precision Enhancer Hz plug-ins. UAD Software v5.6.0 is available as a FREE download to Mac and PC users worldwide.

Have you ever discovered an audio file that doesn’t load in your favorite DAW, or sampler? Or, perhaps after digging out your favorite recording from the archives you discover that something has gone wrong with the audio files themselves? An industry first, Audio File First Aid will give you new insight into the structure of your files, giving you the power to diagnose and repair the most common causes of corrupt audio files. Originally packaged with Wave Editor and Sample Manager and now available in Backline Basic.

Manage, update, and audition your Audio Unit and VST effects all within Backline! The days of launching a full-featured DAW to demo an effect are over, as are the days of scrounging around the internet to find an update. Effect updating uses our Audio Effect Database. Read more about the database, especially how developers can get involved.

Camel Audio has announced the release of Alchemy Player, an affordable software instrument plug-in for those who want the sounds of Alchemy but don’t want to create new presets. Camel Audio has also just released two new sound banks, Cinematic and Dance & Trance. The Player is included free when you purchase any Alchemy soundbank, turning each of these banks into a standalone instrument in its own right.

Alchemy Player includes 150 presets and 360 MB of samples taken from the full factory library, including evolving soundscapes, lush pads, and pulsing arpeggios. With your first soundbank from Camel Audio you get 300 expressive presets for the modest price of $59.

Alchemy Player features the same advanced sample manipulation engine as its big brother, with additive, spectral, granular, sampling and VA synthesis for totally unique sounds, and is easily controlled via a simple and compact interface. This provides sixteen performance controls for real-time tweaking and automation, which have unique functions for each preset carefully chosen by the sound designer; so each preset is like a small synth in its own right. The remix pad also makes it possible to quickly try different variations – simply click and drag to morph between the eight variations. All presets are arranged by productand category for rapid access to the sound you require, to keep your inspiration flowing.

On the Mac, Alchemy Player requires OS X 10.4.9, a 2 GHz Intel or G5 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 3 GB available disk space, and an Audio Units or VST host.

Alchemy Player is available now for $59 / €49 / £39 as a 224 MB download. If at any point you decide you want to access the full power of Alchemy, you can upgrade to the full version for just $199 / €159 / £143, and let your imagination run riot creating your own sounds, explore the 600 presets and 3GB sample library, and gain access to the user library and third party soundbanks. As a further incentive, this month Camel Audio are offering a free soundbank.

Until March 31st you can get 20% off all additional soundbanks, once you have one bank in your basket, so there’s never been a better time to dip your toes in the Alchemical waters. For sound examples and further information on Alchemy Player, please visit the Camel Audio website.

Symbolic Sound Corporation has added support for Open Sound Control (OSC) to its Paca(rana) sound engine. Using Open Sound Control, you can interact with Symbolic Sound’s award-winning Kyma sound design system using a variety of software and real-time controllers, including the Apple iPad and the JazzMutant Lemur, that offer higher resolution and faster update rates than can More >

Symbolic Sound Corporation has added support for Open Sound Control (OSC) to its Paca(rana) sound engine. Using Open Sound Control, you can interact with Symbolic Sound’s award-winning Kyma sound design system using a variety of software and real-time controllers, including the Apple iPad and the JazzMutant Lemur, that offer higher resolution and faster update rates than can be achieved using traditional, standard MIDI controllers.

Symbolic Sound’s innovative Kyma X environment features a unique set of sound synthesis and processing algorithms and a powerful way to easily re-combine these algorithms to create sounds that have never been heard before. Open Sound Control is an open communications protocol that delivers higher speeds, greater resolution, and more flexibility than is afforded by the standard MIDI protocol. By connecting a Paca or Pacarana via Ethernet, sound designers, musicians, and researchers using Kyma can establish bi-directional communication with OSC-enabled devices and software on the network to control parameters of Kyma algorithms.

Back Panel of the Paca(rana), showing the Ethernet Port

Doug Kraul, CEO of Harmony Systems, Inc. is enthusiastic about Kyma’s new OSC technology. “OSC is a brilliant addition to the already stellar Kyma sound design workstation”, said Kraul. “It immediately enables exciting new ways to use Kyma on stage or in the studio. But the true impact of this forward looking technology is the new, innovative controllers and applications that OSC makes possible for the Kyma platform”.

Don’t have any OSC-enabled devices or software yet? Not to worry! You, too, can benefit from the faster speeds, higher resolution, and reduced cable-count of OSC by using Symbolic Sound’s protocol for sending bi-directional MIDI streams over OSC. Symbolic Sound is happy to announce that several third-party development partners are concurrently announcing new software that supports bi-directional communication with Kyma over OSC:

Known as the Rosetta Stone of music controllers, Camille Troillard’s Mac OS X application OSCulator (pictured at top) is already familiar to Kyma users who utilize it for sending individual MIDI controls, OSC, and HID control data over FireWire to Kyma. Now, in OSCulator 2.9.2, you can also send OSC messages directly to the Paca(rana) over the network. OSCulator 2.9.2 also implements Symbolic Sound’s Bi-Directional-MIDI-streams-over-OSC protocol, enabling you to send streams of MIDI events from your software directly to Kyma without need for a MIDI interface on your computer and without having to map each controller individually in OSCulator.

Harmony Systems, Inc. is offering two new Mac OS X applications in its Delora product line, vM2 and PacaMidi, that incorporate Kyma’s new “MIDI-over-OSC” technology to further enhance and facilitate real-time interaction with Kyma. vM2, a “virtual MotorMix”, enables JazzMutant Lemur owners to enjoy automatic, fully integrated tactile control over Kyma’s Virtual Control Surface. Recently updated to include several exciting new features, vM2 2.0 employs “MIDI-over-OSC” to eliminate the complication of physical MIDI cables and interfaces. PacaMidi, Harmony’s newest product, uses “MIDI-over-OSC” to create a “virtual MIDI interface and patchbay” that adds three merged MIDI inputs and one MIDI output to a Paca(rana). This expands Kyma’s connectivity options, while saving you the expense and complexity of using physical MIDI interfaces, hardware mergers, and numerous cables.

If you are one of the many artists using Kyma in conjunction with Ableton’s Live and/or Cycling74’s Max, you’ll be happy to hear that Andrew Capon has written a Max external for bidirectional MIDI communication over OSC that works with both Max and Max For Live.

Sound artists will find this new feature of interest primarily due to the new opportunities it affords for controlling Kyma using OSC-enabled software running on devices such as the newly announced Apple iPad (and compatible iPhone and iPod Touch), the award-winning JazzMutant Lemur multi-touch surface, and numerous other OSC controllers and software.

This new feature may also be of particular interest to research labs and researchers developing data-driven virtual environments. Using the Open Sound Control protocol, researchers can write their own software for updating sound parameters while running experiments or for streaming data from networked computers to the Paca(rana) to update sound synthesis parameters in real time in response to external controllers, experimentally generated data, streams of data from remote sensors, or synthetically generated data based on computer models.

OSC-enabled Kyma X.74 is a free software update for registered Kyma X owners. OSC communication requires the Paca or Pacarana sound engine. Kyma X.74 also comes with additional features, including an 11-times speedup in the Virtual Control Surface, support for the MOTU UltraLite Hybrid mk3, TC Electronic Impact Twin, and Prism Audio Orpheus converters, track-pad compatible menus, refinements to the Tau resynthesis, and more.

AudioSpillage has unveiled DrumSpillage, a completely new drum synth plug-in for Mac OS X. Inspired by early analog and digital drum machines, but expanding massively on the original blueprint, DrumSpillage is equipped with a refreshing, unique and modern feature set designed for today’s electronic musicians and producers.

At the core of DrumSpillage lies a high resolution multi model synthesis architecture. Rather than create a complex “one size fits all” generic drum synth algorithm AudioSpillage created a rich variety of highly flexible algorithms (see full list below). Each model can be tweaked well beyond its standard settings allowing you to create unique, highly personalized kits that no one else has. DrumSpillage features 2 precision ADSR envelopes per pad with ultra fast attack times and smooth release tails. Full control over envelope attack and release shape is provided as well an exponential mapping mode for tighter, punchier and more natural sounding drums. An independent pitch envelope gives you fine control over pitch shape and contour – crucial for designing bass drums to meet your exact needs.

With so many editing parameters, you’ll need good modulation possibilities to add extra interest to your sounds. Each pad has two multi-waveform LFOs capable of being driven well into the audio frequency range. Two global LFOs are available to all pads simultaneously and can even modulate the standard LFOs creating complex non-repetitive modulation sources for unique effects. Each pad has its own independent distortion unit with a choice of 6 algorithms ranging from warm analog style clipping to full digital overload and decimation effects. Add subtle character to your sounds or reshape them completely. Each pad also has a multi-mode filter capable of low pass, high pass, band pass or band reject filtering modes with switchable 12 or 24db/octave cutoff slopes. The filter can be modulated via envelopes and LFOs, and the resonance can be set to self-oscillation.

No need to worry about DrumSpillage becoming old, dated and stale. The model-driven architecture allows AudioSpillage to upgrade DrumSpillage with additional models without affecting the existing GUI and plug-in performance.

Key Features

Softube has announced the official release of their Trident A-Range Equalizer plug-in. The original Trident A-Range console is a legendary piece of equipment. As only thirteen were ever made, it remains a holy grail for sound engineers and producers around the world that hope to create equal works of art to those that were originally recorded on the A-Range — David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, Queen, Elton John, and more.

The A-Range was originally designed in the early 70’s for Trident Studios in London by Malcolm Toft and Barry Porter. Toft was employed as a sound engineer at Trident Studios and when the studio needed a 24 track recording console, he started Trident Audio Developments to design and build the Trident A-Range. Other products followed and found their way to studios around the world. Toft remains active to this day, developing products under the Trident name.

The A-Range plug-in from Softube is the first and only native plug-in that has been fully endorsed by Toft and Trident Audio.

The plug-in version of the A-Range is modeled after a channel on one of the original 13 Trident A-Range consoles. This particular channel strip is channel number 15 from Sweet Silence Studio ‘B’ in Denmark and was borrowed from Danish producer Flemming Rasmussen. The A-Range console has been in Rasmussen’s care for a long time and used by Flemming Rasmussen when recording albums such as Metallica’s Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and …And Justice for All.

The A-Range channel features four bands of equalization and high and low pass filters, the sound of the filters are often referred to as “colorful” and “musical”. When running a hot enough signal through the original unit and boosting the bands it is possible to get it to distort, the sound is a hairy and effective saturation that is just right in some situation and just wrong in others! Even though the unit was never designed to distort, it has definitely been used this way by renowned producers and Softube thought it was only appropriate to stay true to the original unit and add the saturation to the plug-in as an option!

In Short

Created together with original designer Malcolm Toft

Each and every component carefully modeled

Same sweet sounding EQ filters that made the original legendary

Interaction between the different bands, making this equalizer one of its kind

Saturation control

Very CPU friendly

A VST, AudioUnits or RTAS (Pro Tools 7 or higher) compatible host application is required. The Mac version requires OS X 10.4 (or higher) on a G4 or Intel CPU (or higher), 512 MB RAM, a DVD drive and an iLok USB key. The TDM version requires a Pro Tools|HD Accel card.

A-Range is available via direct download from Softube, and at authorized dealers, for an introductory price of $229 (Native) or $329 (TDM/Native). After February, the price will increase to $279 and $449, respectively.

Vortex requires Native Instruments Reaktor 5.15 for Mac or PC. Native Instruments Kore 2 or Maschine are also required if using their respective included templates.

You can purchase Vortex via direct download from Twisted Tools for $29. The 6 free Reaktor ensembles can be downloaded separately from Vortex after registering on their web site.

Twisted Tools is the brainchild of Igor Shilov (Reaktor designer SonicTwist) and Josh Hinden (Director of MIDI, Expression.edu). They aim to bring electronic musicians innovative and user friendly tools, with an emphasis on unique design and high quality sound. While their current emphasis is on developing instruments for the Native Instruments Reaktor platform, future development of Audio Unit and VST devices is planned.
