DMG Audio has released EQuick, a streamlined, ultramodern EQ plug-in built to help you make your mixes magnificent with a fast, intuitive and flexible interface. EQuick was built with its beautiful, clear graph with accessibility and efficiency in mind.

According to DMG Audio’s concept for EQuick, “We wanted to play with the idea of the interface; we wondered whether EQ could be made more intuitive, more direct, and how one would go about making an EQ that made the process even faster. EQuality speeds up your workflow because it sounds great, and you don’t waste any time compensating for defects in what it does. For EQuick we wanted to delve deeper into the design of the interface. Perfection is when there’s nothing more to take away, so we started by stripping down the interface to its most essential element – the graph. EQuick has nothing else. We had to work in all the controls (like Range and Shift) that made EQuality so special and we found that we could do that with the graph. Also, we took account of the fact that different people have different size screens – so you can pick your size for EQuick. But we couldn’t do that at the expense of control, so we built the tooltip system that provides you will all the data you need, when you need it.”

Features

Unbelievably low CPU usage for high instance counts

Generates super-high-quality prototypes, with clear undistorted top

Linear phase mode for mastering and special channels

32 bands of EQ, bells and notches, with a +/-36dB range, and a Q range from 0.1 to 50

Each band can be Peak, HPF, LPF, High Shelf, Low Shelf or Notch

Fully parametric filters (high and low-pass), 6/12/18/24/30/36/42/48db/oct

Shelves which let you move the resonance above or below the curve

Each bank can process Mid, Side or the full stereo image

Adjustable gain-q interaction for ‘musical’ usage

Five different UI sizes

M/S processing per-band with listen

Hi-res Spectrum analyser

8 banks of A/B

Autolisten mode, for quick finding/adjustment of frequencies

On the Mac, EQuick requires OS X 10.4.11 or better, on a G4, G5 or Intel processor. VST, VST3 and AU are supported in both 32-bit and 64-bit hosts. RTAS is supported in 32-bit ProTools 7 or newer.

EQuick can be purchased via direct download from DMG Audio for £74.99, or as part of the EQuality & EQuick bundle for £124.99. The EQuality & Compassion bundle now includes EQuick too, for the same price. A free trial version is also available. Previous EQuality users get a free EQuick licence, as a “thank you” for your support.

DMG Audio has released Compassion, a fully-featured dynamics plug-in that promises to be ready for any processing on any signal. Not just a compressor, Compassion can handle gating, sidechain, parallel compression, frequency-conscious and frequency-specific compression (dynamic EQ style), overcompression, the ability to SHAPE your attack/release curves, a transient shaper, a hybrid clip-limiter module, and much more.

As developer Dave Gamble discovered, “Each different compression task will have a unit best suited to it. So it seemed natural to develop a model of dynamic processing that included all the different schools of design, and build a unit that would allow you to get the job done, no matter what you needed to achieve. I came up with an idea that fused measurement with circuit design. I measured different compressors, built models of the circuits and then unified all the models into one gigantic structure that could model any of them. Then I made as much of it variable as possible; so you could dial in designs in between models.”

Overview

Unprecedented level of flexibility

Multiple styles of dynamic processing available, with in-depth control

Advanced mode for fine-tweaking, Main mode for fast usage

DMG Audio is very pleased to announce EQuality, their debut EQ plug-in for AU and VST hosts. Developer Dave Gamble, with years of experience working for prestigious companies such as Focusrite, Sonalksis and Neyrinck, heads up this new venture which promises a unique style of EQ built from the ground up in both sound and workflow.

Some software EQs are models of hardware. Some are workhorse EQs for surgical correction, or for guiding a track into a mix. Some are for mastering. EQuality is not a model of a specific piece of hardware. It aims to be a great replacement for all your EQs.

From the bottom up, DMG Audio promises that EQuality sounds as good as an EQ can sound. The prototypes are as close to the consistent analogue shapes as can be achieved digitally, without spending extra CPU. When you want to spend extra CPU to close the deal, you can do that too. So far, not many people have reported finding occasions where the difference is perceptible. This is intentional, and apparently one of the secrets that make EQuality different.

From the top-down, EQuality is designed to allow you to make it work the way you prefer. At every stage, DMG Audio has sought out any idiosyncrasies in the design, and replaced them with solutions that make sense, and with options to allow you to have things the way you need them.

In the middle, there’s functionality and flexibility. A lot of it.

Sound features

New technology for generating EQ coefficients that gets you an undistorted, clear analogue-matched top-end

Linear phase processing

Analogue phase-matched processing

Bells and notches, with a +/-36dB range, and a Q range from 0.1 to 50

Shelves which let you move the resonance above or below the curve!

Filters at 6/12/18/24/30/36 db/octave, sweepable resonance

Extra hi-pass, so you can remove rumble on every channel without spending a band on it

M/S processing mode, allows you to process Mid, Side or the Stereo image

Adjustable gain-q interaction for ‘musical’ usage

Workflow features

Three different UI modes, to suit your taste

Range control, to allow you to scale the gain of the EQ response with one control, both positively and negatively

Frequency shift, to allow you to retune the response

Large, configurable spectrum-analyser with readout

Configurable VU, supporting K-metering and variable ballistics

8 banks of A/B

Full preset management system

Undo/redo

Autolisten mode, for quick finding/adjustment of frequencies

Flat button on UI for rapid reset

Clip LED

On the Mac, EQuality requires OS X 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 running on a G4, G5 or Intel Mac, and a host that supports AU, VST or VST3 plug-ins.

EQuality is available via direct download from DMG Audio for £74.99 (around $115 at publishing time). A free demo download is available as well.

www.dmgaudio.com

Discuss EQuality in our Effects forum.
