SoundCloud, the online music service, has launched the first in a series of product integrations with professional music software makers which will enable producers to upload their tracks to the web direct from their favourite audio applications. The first partnerships, announced today at NAMM, are with Studio One from PreSonus and Audiofile Engineering’s Wave Editor, with Ableton Live to follow.

Following on from SoundCloud’s recent partnership with Abbey Road’s online mastering service, today’s announcement marks another step for the service towards its goal of enabling a fully integrated digital music ecosystem.

Studio One and Wave Editor users will be able to upload their tracks direct to their SoundCloud accounts from within the application, bypassing the need to bounce tracks to the desktop and then upload. These integrations were built using the SoundCloud API, which enables any developer to create a huge range of audio applications and services based on core SoundCloud functionality, like the streaming, uploading and downloading of music.

Matthew Foust, Co-Founder and Operations Manager, Audiofile Engineering, said: “Integration of the SoundCloud API in our iPhone and desktop apps not only fits our strategic vision, but is very simple and straightforward.”

Alexander Ljung, SoundCloud CEO, said: “We’re very excited to be launching the first of our music software integrations with PreSonus and Audiofile Engineering. With these upcoming partnerships it’s possible to imagine a production workflow in which you produce a track, upload it to SoundCloud, and send it direct to Abbey Road for mastering without any files hitting your desktop. We’re imagining a future where music professionals can seamlessly use the web together with their desktop tools in a fully integrated and extremely powerful combination. The SoundCloud platform and our open API, in combination with progressive companies like PreSonus and Audiofile Engineering, are making it possible for this future to arrive in 2010.”

PreSonus Studio One Product Manager Jonathan Hillman said: “With Studio One and SoundCloud, musicians can produce their music and share it with millions of listeners in a matter of minutes. We’re very happy to be the first DAW application to introduce the world to 21st-century music production and distribution. We believe this type of integration is critical as the digital-media distribution landscape evolves. And from a development viewpoint, integrating a SoundCloud client into our application took very little time. ”

SoundCloud partnerships with other key music software companies, including Ableton, are already scheduled and set to be released later in 2010.

Studio One, a new cross-platform DAW developed by KristalLabs in cooperation with PreSonus has been unveiled at Musikmesse. It promises to make audio recording, MIDI sequencing, and audio mastering ridiculously simple right out of the box, yet provide a wealth of professional features at the same time.

Fresh code, innovative drag-and-drop MIDI mapping and plug-in management, auto-configuration with PreSonus hardware, insanely good audio quality, unlimited tracks and plug-ins per track, and a powerful, inventive Start page that literally puts the whole project right in your hands are just a few of the compelling features that make Studio One the next generation in audio software. Far from just another music-production program, Studio One changes the rules of the game, giving you a complete, easy-to-use solution from raw tracks to finished master, while supporting the latest standards and technologies.

A powerful tool that will appeal to professionals and hobbyists alike, the Start page (above) allows you to access recent songs and projects, create new ones, configure external devices, and access tutorial information, demo songs, and a special PreSonus news feed. You can download updates and support materials directly from the Start page, without ever leaving Studio One.

Even though PreSonus is new to the DAW scene, Wolfgang Kundrus and Matthias Juwan of KristalLabs bring a wealth of experience to the project. Wolfgang was the main software architect of Cubase and Nuendo while working at Steinberg. He is the founder of the MusicDock online platform. Matthias was working on various commercial software products, among others Cubase, HALion, Plex and the VST plug-in technology, while at Steinberg. He is the lead developer of the well-known freeware sequencer “KRISTAL Audio Engine” for Windows XP and 2000.

The Macintosh version of Studio One will require Mac OS X 10.4.11 or Mac OS X 10.5.2 or higher, an Internet connection, DVD-ROM drive, a minimum 1024×768 display, and a PowerPC G4 1.25 GHz or Intel Core Solo 1.5 GHz processor with 1 GB RAM. A PowerPC G5 or better or Intel Core Duo or Intel Xeon processor or better with 2 GB RAM are recommended.

PreSonus expects Studio One to be available this summer. It will retail for $499 with an estimated street price of $399, and “a very special upgrade/crossgrade program for all existing PreSonus customers.” A light version of Studio One will ship free with all PreSonus interfaces.

Discuss this in our Applications forum.
