Steinberg today released its new CMC controllers. Dedicated to Steinberg’s own Cubase DAW, the six USB-powered CMC units offer an integrated control solution that provides a desirable degree of flexibility and configurability.

The CMC controllers are equipped with a combination of control elements that provide tactile control over certain Cubase functions. Each unit can be used separately or hooked up together with the included joint plate, resulting in a control desk that leaves no wishes unfulfilled.

“The CMC controllers are ultra-portable and the design’s perfect, but more importantly, the units offer a mind-blowing array of control options. Without a doubt, the CMCs are the perfect complement to Cubase, and Nuendo too,” commented Stefan Schreiber, Steinberg’s product marketing manager for hardware.

The CMC-CH channel controller houses 16 illuminated rubber push-buttons, one rotary encoder and a touch fader. The multi-colored buttons provide access to VST instrument settings, solo and mute tracks, bypass EQs, sends and inserts and channel freeze. Eight of the 16 buttons can also be assigned to a second function. The Channel Select button browses through the entire Cubase mixer, while the rotary encoder is used for panning. The LED-based touch fader controls the volume level while displaying the fader level.

The CMC-FD fader controller features four high-precision touch faders with LED-based metering and solo/mute function. The touch faders offer simultaneous control over four channels in Cubase. With the Channel Select and Bank Select buttons, users can jump to individual channels or select entire channel groups in the Cubase mixer. Up to four FD units can be combined together for 16-channel control.

The CMC-QC quick controller boasts 13 illuminated buttons and eight rotary encoders in three different modes: EQ, Quick Control and MIDI. In EQ mode, the rotary encoders reflect the channel EQ controls in Cubase, while the QC mode maps Quick Control capability onto the encoders for controlling effects and other parameters. The MIDI mode turns the unit into a freely configurable MIDI controller. Eight of the 13 push-buttons can be assigned to random Cubase functions. The included CMC-QC editor allows users to adjust MIDI control change parameters through the computer.

The CMC-PD pad controller features 16 highly responsive backlit pads and one rotary encoder. The pads change their background color according to the pressure exerted. Depressing the pads triggers MIDI notes or selects volume response curves. In 4Velocity mode, the pads are used for easy step recording. The rotary encoder browses sounds and presets in Cubase. The included PD editor software is used to assign MIDI notes to each pad.

The CMC-TP transport controller houses 17 buttons and a touch slider. The slider allows users to jog or shuttle through the project, tap in the tempo, scroll, zoom and browse. All major transport functions, including play, stop, record, cycle, fast forward and rewind, are controlled via the CMC-TP. Other buttons are used, for example, to insert markers, set the locator range or insert new tracks. The top four buttons can each be assigned to a second function, for even more control in Cubase.

The CMC-AI controller highlights Steinberg’s universal AI Knob, together with its ten function buttons. The AI Knob allows users to control any control element in Cubase by simply moving the mouse cursor over it. In Volume mode, the AI Knob turns into a high-precision master volume control whereas in Jog mode, the AI Knob is used to jog through the project. The AI Knob also doubles as a browse button to search and select presets. The four function buttons can be assigned to further control parameters.

CMC accessories comprise the CMC Studio Frame 4 and the CMC CC121 Extension Frame. The CMC Studio Frame 4 is a durable construction for housing up to four CMC units. The CMC CC121 Extension Frame can hold up to two CMC units and one CC121 controller.

The Performance Mode turns Sequel 3 into a live tool for creating impromptu arrangements and live mixes by triggering the 24 live performance pads with song sections and variations. With the enhanced Controller Learn feature, it’s possible to connect virtually any MIDI controller to Sequel 3, making MIDI setups easier and less time consuming.

In its third incarnation, Sequel is now featuring multi-take recording. MIDI and audio can be recorded over and over again. The best take is picked from the list of recorded takes when in Take Mode. Another new feature is the Step Envelopes Editor which allows the user to add effects to selected parts of the audio material. Reverse, decay or pitch effects are only a few of the many adjustments users can easily make to their productions.

Steinberg has announced three professional signal processing plug-in bundles which make up the newly introduced Yamaha Vintage Plug-in Collection: Vintage Channel Strip, Vintage Open Deck and Vintage Stomp Pack. The plug-ins of this unique collection have previously only been available as VCM add-on effects for high-end Yamaha digital mixers, but are now for the first time available in VST 3, VST 2.4 and AU plug-in formats for multi-instance use within digital audio workstations.

“With the Virtual Circuitry Modeling technology by Yamaha, we can create accurate reproductions of analog circuitry that result in hardware emulations at a quality that has never been there before,” comments Timo Wildenhain, product marketing manager at Steinberg. “The Portico plug-ins are the first to implement this technology, which we’ve now complemented with Yamaha Vintage Plug-in Collection,” adds Wildenhain.

The Vintage Channel Strip comprises three plug-ins: EQ 601, Compressor 260 and Compressor 276, reproducing the sound characteristics of several classic Yamaha hardware equalizers and compressors from the 1970s.

The Vintage Open Deck recreates the analog circuitry and characteristics of four legendary tape recorders: Swiss ’70, Swiss ’78, Swiss ’85 and American ’70. For an even wider range of variation, the characteristics can be individually applied to the record and playback decks.

Steinberg is proud to announce the release of HALion 4. In its fourth incarnation, software sampler HALion 4 is now available in both VST and AU formats, and has transformed into an entirely new virtual instrument, combining premium sampling with a new mixing engine and virtual analog synthesis.

Employed as standalone version or alternatively as a VST or AU plug-in, HALion 4 is a true masterpiece of technological advancements, offering a fully-integrated sound design environment that exceeds professional demands by fusing sampler, synthesizer, mixing and an array of effects in one powerful VST instrument. Wrapped in a specifically optimized and eminently flexible interface, users can move, resize and group windows, create function tabs as well as save and restore entire window layouts.

HALion 4 not only features quality tools of the likes of its unique morphing filter and FlexPhraser arpeggiator for intricate patterns, but also holds a total of 44 studio-grade effects that include the acclaimed REVerence convolution reverb with its comprehensive response library and compressors for high-dynamic audio processing of the vast sound library with over 1,600 sounds, including the complete HALion Sonic library plus exclusive HALion 4 content. HALion’s state-of-the-art sampling, synthesis and mixing engine boasts pristine audio quality and equally introduces powerful signal routing options, such as an unlimited number of freely assignable buses per program and layer, 32 stereo output channels and 6-channel surround support. Another two of HALion’s many advantages over using any other sampler are the implementation of VST 3.5 with its innovative Note Expression for editing expression data polyphonically and the enhanced MegaTrig tool for programming instrument articulations, varying playing styles and complex conditional triggering modules without the need for page-filling scripting code.

HALion 4 is compatible with major sample formats and integrates perfectly into any VST software. Seamless importing and mapping of sounds means that key range, velocity and root key parameter are extracted directly from the file name while sounds are mapped automatically, directly through drag-and-drop or conveniently through the Mapping Editor. Due to its integrative approach, HALion now allows users to instantly access any sound and FX parameters by assigning Quick Controls for full automation in Cubase, and Steinberg hardware featuring Advanced Integration technology allows for control of HALion control elements.

“HALion 4 is absolutely mind-blowing. Its amazing feature set together with its groundbreaking usability make HALion 4 the perfect choice for turning your creative vision into a reality. Said that, HALion may offer a deluge of tools, content and functionality, but we’ve seen to it that users will never lose the plot while working with it, thanks to the flexible GUI, rich and easily accessible features and its ultimate integration into VST software,” comments Matthias Quellmann, product marketing manager for HALion.

Running in both VST and AU plug-in hosts as well featuring cross-platform compatibility for 32 and 64-bit editions of Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6 make HALion 4 the perfect tool for audio designers and music producers using different machines and systems. Providing true backward compatibility to HALion 3 means that all HALion 3 sound and effect parameters are preserved in this latest version.

HALion 4 will be available in June from the Steinberg Online Shop and authorized Steinberg resellers for €349 / £295. HALion 3 and HALion Sonic users will be able to upgrade to HALion 4 for €99.99 / £84.70.

Steinberg today is proud to announce the release of Cubase 6 and Cubase Artist 6, two new versions of the highly acclaimed Cubase music production system for recording, editing, mixing and producing music to the highest standards. Encompassing refinements and new capabilities, such as extended composing features available in VST Expression 2, phase-accurate multitrack drum editing, plus a wealth of effects and instruments, Cubase 6 and Cubase Artist 6 are available today.

“The sixth version marks a significant release for Cubase,” comments Helge Vogt, Steinberg’s product marketing manager for Cubase. “With over 25 years of experience in creating the very best in music creation software, we at Steinberg are elated to unveil the latest incarnation of Cubase at this leviathan event early in the year. By funneling our entire engineering expertise into Cubase 6 to give our customers better production solutions than ever before, we’ve been able to solidify the position of Cubase as the world’s most popular music production system today. It looks better, feels better and works easier than ever before — Cubase is simply the perfect go-to audio workstation for all styles of music,” Vogt continues.

Cubase 6 offers enhanced workflow features within the Project window. The newly introduced Track Edit Groups option refines the work with multitrack recordings, allowing related events on multiple tracks to be grouped and edited simultaneously, while the new Lane Track offers convenient multitake comping for selecting and consolidating audio parts to form the perfect take. The redesigned transient and automatic tempo detection, phase-accurate audio quantization and drum replacement functions incorporated in Cubase 6 help to smooth out any glitches in live- recorded drum tracks. The Key Editor has further been enhanced with an Inspector panel and the groundbreaking Note Expression feature for creating and editing multiple controller values on a single-note level. Also included is the new Dynamics Lane, which allows real-time listening of dynamic changes while automatically in sync with dynamic notations from the Score Editor.

Cubase 6 - click to zoom

“With the concurrent release of VST 3.5, we’re taking VST to the next level, introducing a revolutionary new approach to controlling musical articulations note by note. It’s called Note Expression and is part of VST Expression 2 which radically simplifies work with large orchestral libraries for symphonic or film scoring. There’s also our virtual guitar amplifier and effects suite, VST Amp Rack, ready to infuse guitar tracks with the right tone in both Cubase and Cubase Artist. So many quality effects, virtual instruments and cool content right out of the box permit Cubase to scale beautifully between the needs of bedroom music producers and chart-topping studio professionals,” remarks product marketing coordinator Carlos Mendoza Rohde on the new features.

Both Cubase 6 and Cubase Artist 6 feature the VST Amp Rack plug-in, which comes with seven amp models, sixteen stomp boxes, six speaker cabinets and two microphone types. A great benefit is added by the HALion Sonic SE virtual instrument, which comes with more than 900 production-ready sounds in Cubase and 550 sounds in Cubase Artist, and the second edition of LoopMash, now boasting more than 20 MIDI- controllable live and slice-based effects. The significantly redesigned graphical user interface minimizes eye strain, which is customizable in its intensity, brightness and tone color settings. Both new Cubase versions offer 64-bit support for Mac operating systems, enabling a performance boost for using more tracks and bigger sample libraries. A few of the enhancements that round out Cubase 6 and Cubase Artist 6 are global project compatibility between Cubase 6 derivates, the new time- stretching algorithms and more than two hours of in-depth video tutorials in high- definition quality.

On the Mac, Cubase 6 requires OS X 10.6 or later (native 32-bit and 64-bit versions included), an Intel dual core CPU, 2 GB RAM, a USB port for USB-eLicenser (license management), and an Internet connection for license activation.

Cubase 6 and Cubase Artist 6 are now shipping and will be available at dealers and in the Steinberg Online Shop for $499 / €599 / £508 and $249 / €299 / £253, respectively.

Steinberg has launched Nuendo 5, a new state-of-the-art production environment tailored to top-flight studios in post production, live recording and audio production. The wealth of new features includes an ADR toolset, new sound design features such as the unique Clip Packages system, new plug-ins as well as a range of mixing, routing and automation enhancements.

“This is a landmark release for Nuendo, introducing extremely valuable new functionality to what is probably the premiere native production platform for post, live and audio production,” comments Timo Wildenhain, Steinberg’s Product Marketing Manager for Nuendo. “These days, efficiency, stability and speed in everyday tasks are absolutely critical, as is the ability to adapt software to changing needs and situations. These goals are exactly what Nuendo 5 has been designed to achieve, and have contributed to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic feedback from the first shows on the Nuendo 5 World Tour, which has been amazing so far,” Wildenhain adds.

Among the new features presented in Nuendo 5 is a new ADR toolset engineered for audio post, providing new capabilities for spotting including advanced take- and marker handling, EDL import, a new video engine and much more. Clip Packages have been designed specifically for sound editors as a new way of organizing and handling audio as clusters of files across multiple tracks that can be archived, previewed and retrieved almost instantly using the upgraded Nuendo 5 MediaBay.

Enhanced mixing features in Nuendo 5 include further developments on the industry-leading Nuendo automation system as well as direct routing with multiple destinations. A new plug-in set with the next-generation Surround Panner and a surround bus Patch Editor further add to the advanced feature set for surround that have been the hallmark of the Nuendo audio engine since its inception. Numerous other additions in Nuendo 5 include a waveform display in the Nuendo mixer, improved compatibility with Pro Tools audio files and automated Batch Export functions.

Nuendo 5 also integrates seamlessly with Steinberg’s Nuendo SyncStation synchronizer hardware, providing sample-accurate sync in almost any situation requiring rock-solid sync to almost any modern sync standard. Nuendo 5 also features complete support for a range of controller devices such as Euphonix, WK Audio and the Smart AV Tango.

Supporting OS X 10.5.8 and 10.6 or later on Intel Macs, Nuendo 5 will be available from authorized Steinberg dealers in June for €1799.00 / £1531.00 MSRP.
